Congratulations on your forthcoming nuptial ceremony! Music is an extremely important part of the Catholic worship service, and at Saint Mary Cathedral, we are especially proud of our music program. Our musicians are held to the highest professional and performance standards and will make a meaningful and memorable contribution to the prayerful and joyous atmosphere of your nuptial ceremony.
Brooks Whitmore is the organist and musical consultant for all weddings held at the Cathedral. All couples are expected to schedule a consultation with him about six or seven weeks before the wedding date by calling one of the above listed phone numbers. All music will be selected at the consultation. Dr. Whitmore is prepared to make appropriate suggestions if helpful to you.
If the wedding ceremony is to be a full nuptial Mass (i.e. Communion), the service will last approximately one hour, depending on the number of communicants present. Portions of the ceremony for which music is appropriate and desirable are:
Seating of the Family
Psalm (sung only if a cantor is present)
Presentation to the Blessed Mother (optional)
If you are members of the Cathedral parish, you are aware of the extremely high caliber of music we enjoy here at Saint Mary Cathedral. If you are new to the Cathedral, be assured that the very best musicians in Central Texas are available for your ceremony. The fees set below are well within the guidelines established by the American Guild of Organists and reflect the professionalism of the music staff.
Fee Schedule for Musicians
Organist base fee: $300 ($350 if there is a cantor or other instrumentalist, $400 if both) payable to Brooks Whitmore. Should another organist be requested and approved to play for the wedding, a bench fee of $250 is required, payable to Brooks Whitmore, who will meet with the guest organist to familiarize them with the instrument in the Cathedral. Brooks will be happy to arrange for the services of one of our soloist or instrumentalists to perform at your wedding. If an outside soloist is engaged and approved to perform for the wedding, the organist fee may be elevated slightly.
Vocalist soloist: $250, check made payable to the individual engaged. We strongly recommend that only the professional staff employed by the Office of Music be engaged to sing at your wedding. Exceptions to this recommendation must be approved by Jeffrey Jones-Ragona, Director of Music, 512.472.4540. This soloist may cantor the Responsorial Psalm, other service responses and sing two or three solos. More pieces may be requested, but this may incur additional charges. Only sacred music may be used. Dr. Whitmore will be happy to arrange for one of our soloists to sing at your wedding.
The Music Office of the Cathedral employs a professional quartet for the purpose of singing service music. They may be heard at the 9:30 a.m. Sunday Mass. The quartet is contracted through the Office of Music (Jeffrey Jones-Ragona, director) at 512.472.4540. Their fees are $250 per person.
The services of the Schola Cantorum may be arranged through Jeffrey Jones-Ragona at 512.472.4540.
Additional instrumentalists: Fees vary but are generally $250 per performer. These will be contracted by either Brooks Whitmore, organist, or Jeffrey Jones-Ragona, the Director of Sacred Music. The couple may recommend an instrumental performer of they wish, but the performer must be of superior ability in accordance with the musical standards upheld by the Cathedral. The organist’s fee for working with performers requested by the couple will be slightly elevated.
It is preferable that only the bridal couple consult with Brooks. Parents may be present at the consultation. Wedding planners, professional coordinators or consultants are forbidden from attending the consultation. The Cathedral’s own wedding coordinator is the only exception.
