The roofing contractor spent last Friday atop the Cathedral roof determining the cause of the leak on the southwest wall. It became readily apparent that the tar surface placed atop the flashing slowly separated, allowing water to seep in. Eventually the water saturated the stone, resulting in the failed plaster and paint and the loss of the corbel.
We are now at the point where we believe we will be given the go ahead by our insurance company to move forward with the repairs, which will take approximately three weeks.
As a side note, we were allowed to move ahead and build a cast for the lost corbel. Using the corbel on the northeast corner of the Cathedral, artisan Randy Smith created a perfect match with minimal damage to the existing corbel. It was a wonderful process to watch over a six week period.
Barring any major setbacks, we expect to have all repairs finished by Christmas.
