In order to become a Catholic, individuals go through several rites (celebration of a sacrament) throughout the year, with the final being at the Easter Vigil when they are welcomed into the Catholic Church. Parishes welcome these new Catholics through the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA, formerly RCIA). The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops changed the name in 2025 to better reflect its mission.
OCIA is the process through which the Catholic Church welcomes, educates, and equips those persons seeking full communion in the Catholic faith. OCIA is designed for the following persons:
* Those who have never been baptized * Those who have been baptized in another Christian faith * Those who have been baptized Catholic but never prepared for and received First Communion and/or Confirmation
The journey towards becoming Catholic looks different for each person. Whether you are unbaptized, baptized in another faith, or were baptized Catholic but never received Holy Eucharist and Confirmation, we are grateful to accompany you on your journey.
Welcome to Saint Mary Cathedral!
