“Qui bene cantat bis orat” - (Who sings well, prays twice)
Choir to sing the liturgy of the Roman Catholic Mass celebrated according to the 1962 Missal,
Sundays at 3:30 p.m., St. Mary Cathedral, Austin
Music
Missa cantata (or sung Mass) is celebrated the first Sunday of every month and major feast days. The choir prepares
Gregorian chant propers as well as
chanted Mass ordinaries according to the Vatican schedule of seasonal Mass chants.
Latin plainchant hymns and sacred polyphony accompany these Masses as well as the
Missa privata (spoken Mass) on all other Sundays.
Choir
Currently consists of about a dozen singers representing a range of vocal experience and musicianship skills. We welcome anyone who has a love of the Latin Mass and a desire to serve through music. We are fortunate to be served by Dr. Brooks Whitmore, Cathedral organist, who also directs the St. Augustine Youth Choir.
Rehearsals
Every Sunday at 2:30 p.m. before Mass
Wednesday preceding the first Sunday of the month, 7:30-9 p.m.
As needed to prepare for special feasts
Rehearsals are held at St. Mary Cathedral
Chant
We sing from chant notation on the 4-line staff as well as conventional notation. Much of our music is found in The
Parish Book of Chant which, in addition to Latin hymns and chant Masses, contains the Latin/English text for the entire Mass in both Ordinary and Extraordinary Form, a tutorial on Latin pronunciation, and also a guide to singing chant notation. This small and modestly-priced book can be ordered or downloaded for free at
musicasacra.com, and is also available in the Cathedral
Ave Maria gift shop.
